13살에 소니와 계약하다. 

그녀의 재능을 알아본 지인들의 도움을 받은 그녀는 소니 오디션을 통해 3곡을 불렀고 이는 바로 계약으로 이어졌다. 그러나 1991년에서 1995년 초반까지 두장의 정규앨범과 수많은 프로모션 앨범을 발매했으나 상업적으로 실패한다. 심지어 첫 앨범은 1,200장이 팔렸다. 이후 5년간 많은 노력 끝에 스페인언어어권 국가에는 어느 정도 성공을 이루어냈으나 어디까지나 한계가 있는 성공이었다. 그러나  1995년의 'Pies Descalzos'가 어느 정도의 상업적인 성공을 거두자 1997년 그 앨범의 이름을 딴 어린이 재단 '맨발 재단(Pies Descalzos)'를 설립하여 아이들이 걱정 없이 학교에 다닐 수 있도록 영양이 풍부한 급식과 안전한 교육시설을 제공하게 한다. 이때가 18살 때이다. 

샤키라는 삶의 질을 개선하고 빈곤지역에 사는 어린이가 평등한 교육을 받기 위해 재단을 설립했을 뿐만 아니라 콜롬비아에 4개의 학교를 세운다. 지금은 운동 좀 한다는 여성들이 배우는 벨리댄스를 전 세계적으로 유행하게 만든 장본인이 바로 샤키라다.
