잊혀진 레게 뮤지선 전설, Fuges-No woman, no cry

망명를 뜻하는 Refugee의 준말을 뜻하는 Fuges(푸지스)라는 그룹은 1994년에 결성된 삼인조 혼성 그룹이다.

와이프클리프 진, 로린 힐, 프라스 세명의 멤버로 결성되었으며 No woman no cry가 수록된 2집의 The Score는 단일앨범으로 무려 1,700만장이 팔린 앨범이다.

 

푸지스의 보컬 로린힐은 뛰어난 재능을 가지고 있으며 시스테 액트2에 출연한 적도 있다. 세 명의 멤버 중 두 명이 보트 피플이라는 인식때문에 그룹이름도 그렇게 지었다. 지금도 그렇지만 보트피플때문에 수많은 문제를 일으키고 있다는 미국의 문제는 오래전에 시작된 것이다. 지금의 미국인들도 원래는 보트피플이나 다름이 없다. 그들이 기득권을 장악하고 나서 사다리 걷어차기를 한것이다.

 

인도를 발견한 줄 알고 착각한 사람이 붙여준 이름 인디언은 인도에 사는 사람을 의미하였기에 애초부터 잘못되었다고 볼 수 있다. 굳이 말하자면 Native American이라고 보는것이 맞다. 보트피플이었던 백인들이 이방인이며 지금의 보트피플이었던 것이다.

 

보트피플이었던 백인들이 먹을것도 없어서 죽어가던때에 그들에게 손을 내밀어 준것은 토착인들이었다.

흔히 예수 그리스도가 부활한 것을 기념하는 날로 알려진 부활절의 유래는 많지만 죽어가는 백인들을 살려준 인디언들의 음식 그리고 살아남음을 축하했다. 그것이 미국 부활절의 시초였다는 사람들도 있다. 그러나 회복한 백인들은 그 힘을 인디언들을 죽이는데 사용한다. 부활절토끼와 부활절계란 역시 기독교인들의 산물이 아니다. 달걀은 생명이 싹트는 부활을 의미하는데 고대 이집트인들이 춘분 축제때 달걀을 나누어 먹었던 것에 기인한다. 토끼는 야생토끼나 집토기는 게르만의 여신 오스타라를 나타내며 전설에서는 토끼가 이미 달과 연결되어 있었다.
